The Tools of the Trade Needed for Installing Copper Gutters

The various tools required for installing copper gutters do not differ much from the tools you will use to install other types of gutter systems. It is important to keep in mind that copper is much heavier than more common materials like aluminum, so it is important to prepare for the extra weight and how you will accommodate it during installation. Otherwise, be sure that you have the following tools handy.

Quality Ladders

Ladders are some of the most important tools a gutter installer can have in his or her arsenal. It is ideal to have several ladder sizes available to you, and it is also important to make sure you buy good quality ladders that will provide ample safety for many years to come. Be sure that you understand the ladders’ weight ratings and never exceed them under any circumstances. You might also opt to purchase a stabilizer bar if your ladder of choice doesn’t come with one at the time of purchase.

Saws

Gutter installers utilize several different saws to cut holes for outlets and cut lengths of copper gutter to size. Outlet saws are necessary in this regard as they create clean cuts in various types of gutters that allow for the perfect placement of outlets. You might also find a gutter outlet punch to be an invaluable tool for making quick work of outlets.

Soldering Irons and Related Tools

When working with copper gutters, soldering is the best way to seal gaps. It is important that you invest in a quality soldering iron along with the best possible solder material available. Some other accessories that may come in handy include flux, gas regulators, hoses, bits, carry bags, and more. These make soldering more convenient, especially if you are performing the job on a ladder well above the ground.

Caulk and Caulk Guns

Caulk is an important part of gutter installation, and the higher the quality caulk you use, the less frequently it will need to be reapplied. Caulk prevents leaks at seams and cracks, and it can also prevent rainwater from falling behind the gutter rather than into it. You will need to make sure you are using the appropriate caulk for the job, and you will also want to be sure the caulk gun you purchase is high quality and easy to use.

Safety Equipment

Some of the safety equipment you will want to invest in when you hang copper gutters include: gloves for the safe handling of metal that may have sharp edges, safety glasses to prevent debris from getting in your eyes (especially if you are removing old gutters before placing the new copper ones), and non-slip shoes that are perfect for keeping you safe as you climb ladders.

Of course, this is not a complete list of the tools you will need to install copper gutters. Other important tools of the trade include a chalk line, measuring tape, and other everyday tools that most contractors and even homeowners will already have in their arsenal. By ensuring you have everything you need before getting started, you can make sure your gutter installation is painless, quick, functional, and beautiful.
